Stegosaurus: what were those plates for?

You can recognise the silhouette instantly. Explaining the plates along its back takes a little more detective work.

Plates and spikes did different jobs

Stegosaurus was a four-legged plant eater. Its back plates sat in the skin rather than attaching directly to the spine, so they often separated from the rest of the body after death. Its tail carried substantial spikes that could help defend it. The plates themselves were comparatively thin: treating every part of this dinosaur as the same kind of protective armour misses an important distinction.

The question is still open

Display and temperature regulation are among the proposed roles for the plates. Their shape could have made an animal conspicuous to other members of its species, while evidence of blood vessels raises questions about heat exchange. Neither idea gives us a recording of a living Stegosaurus. More than one function is possible, and a careful account should keep the explanation open.

One skeleton, many new questions

The Natural History Museum’s specimen nicknamed Sophie was discovered in Wyoming in 2003. Its unusually well-preserved, three-dimensional bones let researchers use scans to investigate the animal’s body and movement. A nearly complete specimen is valuable because relationships between bones can be studied together, rather than inferred from isolated pieces.

Be your own evidence checker

Draw two columns: “observed” and “suggested”. Put the presence of plates in the first. Put a proposed use for them in the second. This small habit helps you read dinosaur books, museum labels, and dramatic reconstructions with a more curious eye.

Test your curiosity

Have scientists settled on one certain purpose for the plates?

Reveal the answer

No. Several functions have been proposed. The physical plates are evidence; explanations of their use need to be tested against that evidence.
